Obituary for Joseph Lewis Mercer

Joe was born June 6, 1938 in Dayton, OH and passed away February 21, 2020.

He was preceded in death by his birth parents, Joseph and Naomi Sokoloski; adopted parents, George and Corella Mercer; wife, Karen McGee-Mercer; and sister, Esther Laird.

He is survived by his brother, Phillip Herres; twin children Bradley “Joey” (Shannon) Mercer and Jill (Craig) Newburg; grandchildren, Lauren and Sophie Mercer, Macy, Chloe and Keli Newburg; many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends, and his loving dog “Alfie”.

He was a veteran of the United States Army and 1970 graduate of the University of Dayton.
He was employed by Ledex in Vandalia, Ohio and by Dollar Towne in Bellbrook, OH.

He was an avid antique collector and gardener, and loved vacationing in Dayton Beach, FL.

He was a 27-year resident of St. Anne’s Hill Historic District where he resided in a Victorian style home that was his pride and joy. He had a great sense of humor and was the life of the party.

Visitation will be held Thursday, February 27, 2020 from 6pm to 8pm at Schlientz & Moore Funeral Home, located at 1632 Wayne Avenue in Dayton, OH.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, February 28, 2020 at 10:00am at Holy Trinity Church located at 272 Bainbridge Street in Dayton, OH.
Burial will follow at Woodland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Hospice of Dayton.
